GHOST NOTE COMPETITION 2008

Compositions for the Bösendorfer Computer Grand Piano

Terms and Conditions of the GHOST NOTE COMPETITION

In case any of the following terms and conditions (indicated with § and a number) or parts of it turn out to be invalid, the competition is still subject to all other terms and conditions mentioned below.

§1 Contents
The KOFAKTOR - Organisation (for Composition Research and Fusion of the Arts) announces an international competition for compositions for computer piano music.
A jury installed by KOFAKTOR will award a prize to a composition for computer piano.

Although the terms and conditions may be provided in several languages, the German original version is legally valid.

§2 Awards

Main award shall be a VST-sampling plug-in with piano-sound.

Apart from the winning composition, up to seven further compositions selected from all submissions will be performed at the KOFAKTOR- chamber music art festivals (December 12th 2008  in the Bösendorfer piano factory). The composers of the selected compositions will receive their piece of music recorded on CD and (backstage) passes for the concert.
The names of the composers of the selected compositions will be announced on the webpage
www.kofaktor.com/ghost_note_competition.
KOFAKTOR does not intend to perform an award ceremony. The decision of the jury installed by KOFAKTOR shall be final.

§3 Composers

Composers must be born before 1st of January 1988. There are no further age restrictions.
There are no restrictions as far as nationality of the composer is concerned.
The composer must submit his work in person.
The submitting composer confirms that the information (e.g. personal data, creatorship) provided does not deviate from the truth.

§4 Requirements for a successful submission

The pieces of music may have been previously released (performed or published in any other way).  The compositions should not exceed a length of 7 minutes time.
A winner will be selected solely by one core criterion, which is embodied by the aesthetic necessity for the piece to be performed on a Computer Grand Piano. However possible, general style aspects, aesthetic-ideological aspects or matters of taste will be excluded as criteria for selecting a winner.

In the concert, the pieces will be played from Standard-MIDI-Files!
KOFAKTOR retains right to play the selected pieces of music alongside (mute) video films. The composer grants a permit for that type of performance.

(Members of KOFAKTOR are excluded from the competition. Compositions by KOFAKTOR members will be performed in a 2nd part of the concert)

§5 Submission
Submission is not anonymous –due to the organiser’s personal opinion that anonymous assessment is hard to realise.

Technical limits of the Bösendorfer Computer Grand Piano CEUS.

More or less: what is ever possible on a MIDI-piano, works also with the Bösendorfer
Computer Grand Piano CEUS.

However, the Computer Grand Piano CEUS is not a piano module based on samples. It is a high-tech- and a physical instrument. That means real articulation of strings by hammers.
The product-manager of the CEUS asserts that the grand piano is processing external MIDI-data effortlessly using a sophisticated algorithm for the interpretation of this information. The frequencies for repeating sounds must be kept in mind: One key can be stroke with a speed of a maximum of 15 times per second.

Please note that such a tremolo (rapid repetition of one sound) at high volume can generate giant noise. Doubling of single sounds can lead to such undesired results and must therefore be avoided whatsoever.

Submission checklist

Print PDF of the form (www.kofaktor.com/ghost_note_competition/form/english.pdf), fill it in and sign it on each page. Enclose the MIDI-File on a data-CD (labelled with name and title) plus the fee.
No recourse to legal action is permitted. The decision of the jury shall be final.
